Coping Technique: 5-4-3-2-1

The What - What is the 5-4-3-2-1 Coping Technique?

Start by taking 3 deep breaths.

5 - SEE: Notice 5 things you can see in your environment – name them. e.g. the computer on the desk, the tree in the garden, the yellow ball in the street...

4 - FEEL: Notice 4 things you can feel or touch e.g. your feet on the ground, the pillow behind your back, your hand on your leg...

3 - HEAR: Notice 3 things you can hear around you e.g. the air conditioner running, the wind rustling the leaves in the tree, a bird chirping...

2 - SMELL: Notice 2 things you can smell (or that you wish you could smell) e.g. ground coffee, the flowers in the garden, the freshly baked bread...

1 - TASTE: Notice 1 thing you can taste (or that you wish you could taste) e.g. the meal you are eating, the mint in our mouth, the tea you are drinking...

End by taking another 3 breaths and repeat until you start feeling less anxious or angry or overwhelmed.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit. Autem dolore, alias, numquam enim ab voluptate id quam harum ducimus cupiditate similique quisquam et deserunt, recusandae.

The When - When can you use this technique?

This technique can be used in almost any situation where you find yourself overwhelmed, stressed out and feeling like you are out of control like when you are getting angry. Some examples of situations you can use this technique are:

  • You need to give a presentation in front of your whole class or your colleagues and boss
  • You are stuck in traffic and feel the frustration mounting
  • You are waiting in line at the grocery store and the person in front of you is taking forever and you have 5 minutes to pick up your children from daycare
  • You have an interview in an hour

The Who - Who can you use this technique?

This technique can be used by children as well as adults who have awareness of their senses.

The Where - Where can you use this technique?

Anywhere. The great thing about this technique is that no one really even knows you are doing it and it can be done within minutes.

The Why - Why does 5-4-3-2-1 work?

It is not easy for the brain to let go when anxiety or panic takes hold. Anxiety takes us away from the present moment by either making us remember pain that is tied to our past or anticipating fear or worry about a future that has not yet happened. This then causes the negative thought spiral to begin. One anxious thought leads to another and soon enough, our thoughts feed our anxiety and stress. As we get lost in our negative thoughts or worries, we lose our connection to the present moment and to what is happening right now. So, one technique that helps bring us back to what is happening in the present moment is the 5-4-3-2-1 technique.

The How - How does 5-4-3-2-1 work?

This technique is a deactivating strategy that uses mindfulness to calm your nervous system and bring your back into your Window of Tolerance (if you want to know what this means, this is some of the work we do with our clients during therapy sessions).

Basically, this technique works by helping you shift your attention from the thoughts and/ or circumstances that are causing you anxiety or emotional overwhelm by using your senses to focus on what is going on in the present. As such, it helps change your brain’s response to stress by bringing you into the present moment by making your feel more connected to your body and secondly, it makes us curious about the world around us in an open and non-judgmental way.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-11
