Maybe you snapped at someone you love and brushed it off. Maybe you told yourself it's just a busy season but if you're being honest, you can't remember when it wasn't. You're hitting your deadlines. You're showing up. You're holding it together. And somehow that's exactly what makes it so hard to explain why you feel so depleted.
Because from the outside, everything looks fine.
Even when you're doing things you used to enjoy or spending time with the people you love, your brain won't slow down. You're already thinking about tomorrow. Already calculating what's next. You want to feel present, to actually enjoy the life you've worked so hard to build. But instead you find yourself:
Lying awake at 11pm mentally rehearsing tomorrow, exhausted but unable to switch off
Less patience at home with the people who matter most, and guilt about it after
Going through the motions at work without the spark that used to drive you
Saying yes when your whole body is screaming no
Asking yourself quietly, "Is this just what life is now?"
At In Time Counselling, we offer burnout therapy in Ajax and across Ontario that helps you understand what's driving your exhaustion, rebuild boundaries that actually hold, and start feeling like yourself again, before burnout forces you to stop.

And I know that might sound too simple when you're in the thick of it but stay with me.
You don't have to keep white-knuckling through your days. You don't have to earn rest. You don't have to be the one who holds everything together all the time. Therapy gives you a space to finally put it down and figure out why picking it all up felt so necessary in the first place.
Together we'll work on three things:
Getting to the root of your exhaustion because it's rarely just about being busy
Building boundaries that actually stick so, you can say no without the guilt spiral that follows
Learning to switch off so, you can be present at home, sleep without replaying your day, and actually enjoy what you've built
I'll meet you where you are. No generic advice. No clichés about self-care. Just real, grounded work that respects how capable you are, while also being honest that capable people burn out too.
Your drive isn't the problem. Let's just make sure it stops costing you so much.

Burnout isn't just about being busy. It lives in your nervous system, your patterns, and the stories you've been carrying about what you have to do to be enough. The modalities we use reflect that.
I draw from approaches that support both mind and body, including:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): To process the deeper experiences and beliefs driving your overwork, perfectionism, and chronic stress.
Internal Family Systems (IFS): To understand the parts of you that push hard, avoid rest, and keep you stuck in cycles that no longer serve you.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): To reconnect with the emotions underneath the exhaustion and build a steadier, more grounded relationship with yourself.
There is no one-size-fits-all formula. You bring your whole story and we figure out the right path forward together.

Honestly? It's less formal than most people expect. We talk, we dig into what's actually going on, and depending on what you need that day we might work on patterns, nervous system stuff, or just untangle whatever's been sitting heavy that week. Some sessions feel like a relief just to say things out loud. Others are more active, working through specific beliefs or responses that keep tripping you up. There's no script and no worksheet to fill out. It's just real, focused work built around you.
Stress usually has a source - a big project, a difficult season, a specific thing you're waiting to get through. And when that thing passes, you feel it lift. Burnout is sneakier. It's when you've been running on empty for so long that even rest stops working. If you're getting eight hours of sleep and still waking up exhausted, if you're on vacation but your brain never actually left the office, if the version of you that used to feel energized and engaged seems like a distant memory - that's not just stress. That's your nervous system telling you something needs to change.
I wish I could give you a concrete answer - but it really does depend. Burnout that's been quietly building for five years takes longer to unwind than burnout you've caught early. That said, most people start feeling genuinely different within a few months of consistent work. Not "I've fixed everything" different - but lighter, clearer, more like themselves. We'll check in regularly on how things are moving and adjust as we go. This isn't about hitting a finish line. It's about building something that actually lasts.
Vacation helps until you're back at your desk on Monday and nothing has actually changed. And if you're anything like most of the people I work with, you probably spent half the trip mentally at work anyway. Burnout isn't a rest problem. It's a pattern problem. Therapy gets underneath it - the over-functioning, the difficulty switching off, the part of you that doesn't quite believe you're allowed to slow down. A holiday gives you breathing room. Therapy changes what you come back to.
If you're exhausted but can't stop, functioning on the outside but running on empty on the inside, or you've tried pushing through and it's stopped working, you're probably in the right place. You don't need to be falling apart to start. Actually the earlier you come in the faster things tend to shift. And if you're still not sure? Book a free consultation. We'll have an honest conversation about where you're at and whether this feels like the right fit. No pressure, no commitment, just a conversation.

Maybe something on this page felt a little too familiar. Maybe you've been thinking about this for a while and just haven't taken the step yet. Whatever brought you here - you don't have to figure out the next part alone. Burnout rarely travels alone. For many high-responsibility professionals it shows up alongside anxiety and financial stress - each one quietly feeding the other. If any of that resonates, you might find it worth exploring those pages too.
Reaching out is the hardest part.
Everything after that is just one conversation at a time.
