Can Therapy Really Help Me?

It definitely helps some people. Therapy gives you a space where you're not judged and where you're not told what to do. we want to give you a place where you feel safe to share and talk about the things in your life that are making it challenging and difficult. Therapy however, takes work and time. And, we won't lie, it can get uncomfortable and messy. But, we feel like most people leave counselling feeling like the time and energy they put into therapy was well worth it.

What is Your Approach to Therapy?

We are so glad you asked! No really, it's a great question. We are relational therapists. This means that when we meet, part of our initial intake process will be to explore the influences and relationships with your self and others that you experienced throughout your life and the impact they are having on your present life. This is an important part of our work together, as we believe that the way we are in our present has a lot to do with what we experienced growing up. Some of the theories and interventions we draw from are Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), to name a few. Make sure you ask your therapist what their approach to therapy is.

How Can I Tell if a Therapist is Right for Me?

There are a few ways that you can go about figuring that out:

- One way is the "you'll know when you know" method. It's important to feel like you connect with someone if they're going to be your therapist. Sometimes you can get a sense of this on the phone and sometimes it takes around 2-3 sessions to know.

- Another option is to do a little research and see if your therapist specializes in the concerns that are bringing you to therapy. This can be really valuable. Most therapists offer consultations to determine if they will be a good fit for you. We offer a free 15-minute phone consultation with our therapists if you are interested in learning who is the right fit.

In the end, it really is your decision because you deserve to decide on your therapist. For parents, it's probably best to let your child have plenty of input in choosing their therapist.

Is Therapy the Only Option?

Sometimes, therapy may not be the right fit for you for a number of reasons. We will do our best to present alternatives to you in an honest way if we feel that something else may be more beneficial to you. Some examples of alternative treatments are:

- A consult with a family doctor or psychiatrist to determine if a medical condition is a contributing factor or if medications may be helpful

- A consult with a psychiatrist or psychologist to assess for mental health diagnoses

- Self-help programs

- Group Therapy programs

- Stress management programs

- Peer-support groups

- Meditation programs

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-11
